Developing an Open-Source Vector Database Using AWS Solutions
Qdrant is a startup looking to power the next generation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications with advanced and high-performing vector similarity search technology. The company created its vector search database to help enterprise companies with near-real-time data retrieval and to provide the tools to write generative AI solutions.
Machine learning engineers, data scientists, and AI engineers alike can use the Qdrant database to run queries on unstructured data and gain insights to inform business decisions and generative AI solution development. The solution covers use cases such as facial recognition, anomaly detection, and product recommendations.
The company’s main priorities for its vector database include performance, scalability, and ease of use. Users can find relevant information quickly with low latency and reduced resource usage. Additionally, the Qdrant database helps to meet large data requirements at affordable prices.
Qdrant made the database available in 2021 as an open-source solution. Since the beginning of 2023, Qdrant has also released a commercial version of the database as a managed cloud solution on AWS, and this version is available on AWS Marketplace.
“We needed a commercial solution provider,” says Zayarni. “We asked our community of early cloud adopters, and they told us that AWS was their most desirable destination.”
Saving Costs and Increasing Reliability Using AWS
Qdrant powers its solution using AWS storage and compute solutions. By using fully managed services, it can scale effortlessly and reduce the cost of running its resources. The company has saved more than 30 percent in total costs by hosting its solution on AWS infrastructure.

Introducing New Features for Qdrant
Qdrant continues to refine its solution with new updates. It plans to add scalability features for larger companies that use the software. A hybrid software-as-a-service solution with multitenant architecture is also in the works.
“We’re constantly asking the AWS team for advice and suggestions on how to improve,” says Zayarni. “It’s great to have a support system as we keep optimizing our solution.”
